Beautiful poem!
The past is already past.
Don't try to regain it.
The present does not stay.
Don't try to touch it.
Don't try to regain it.
The present does not stay.
Don't try to touch it.
From moment to moment.
The future has not come;
Don't think about it
Beforehand.
Whatever comes to the eye,
Leave it be.
There are no commandments
To be kept;
There's no filth to be cleansed.
With empty mind really
Penetrated, the dharmas
Have no life.
When you can be like this,
You've completed
The ultimate attainment.

- You, Piotr Ludwiński, Michael Zaurov, John Tan and 21 others like this.
- Jason Cullen Layman Pang's dying words: "I ask that you regard everything that is as empty, nor give substance to that which has none. Farewell. The world is like reflections and echoes."
- John Tan Yes Ablert, Layman Pang is a highly respected layman in the history of Zen, status almost equivalent to Vimalakirti. His death story demonstrates more living zen than his dying words. Do read about it!
- Jason Cullen I'm sorry, John, I was joking! I think you mean 居士 as 'layman' or 'layperson'. "A good lay" in English has a radically different meaning...
- Jason Cullen In the King James Bible, which was the first authorized translation of the Bible into English, 'sex' was often referred to as 'he lay with her'. So 'lay' (as in "she was a good lay") became slang for someone you had sex with.
- John Tan Thks Jason! Din know abt that. I edited it. 龐居士 is one that I respect a lot...so do not want to use the wrong term.
- Jason Cullen I had some Chinese Malaysian roommates when I lived in Shanghai, so I got to learn about all kinds of wonderful differences and similarities between North American English and Singapore/Malaysian English! So no worries! I respect 龐居士, too!
- Viorica Doina Neacsu Deborah, here you can find that poem and many others
